Get Your Bearings
BY ABBIGAIL KRIEBS
Bearings are an essential part of any industrial facility, and one that can easily be done wrong. The mission-critical role that they play in a manufacturing facility merely compounds
their importance to manufacturers and distributors alike.
Know What You Need
Dave Shephard, U.S. Sales Manager for Amcan Bearing USA,
Inc., says the basics of bearings start with knowing what you need.
“Using the correct bearing is important,” Shephard says, “
Replacement of bearings with the same style and size as originally
designed will ensure machinery functions properly.” In this way,
the end user is able to maximize productivity and avoid premature
machinery failure at the fault of the bearing.
Different materials have different applications. “For example,
using a steel bearing in salt water will result in a premature fail-
ure, where a chemically inert material like ceramic would be far
more appropriate,” says Jason Flanzbaum, Vice President of ecom-
merce and Marketing for Boca Bearing.
SKF (Sweden) introduces SKF Insight™,
a groundbreaking innovation in intelligent
that are integrated
into SKF bearings. The
developments in various smart technologies
now enable bearings
to communicate their
sensors and data acquisition electronics. Bearings have long been
considered the heart of rotating machinery: now SKF makes them
the brain as well. By sensing directly on the bearing, SKF is able to
monitor the damage from the first microscopic effect as it is happening, and with this information, customers can take remedial
action to reduce the reason for damage in the bearing – adding
lubricant, mitigating transient overloads, etc.

Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics (Germany)
has launched its
innovative NORGLIDE® composite bearings solutions for hydraulic
in heavy-duty vehicles. Self-lubricating
and wear-resistant, Saint-Gobain’s technology
ensures friction control
within pump applications
throughout the long life of
the mechanism. NORGLIDE® composite bearings also help European manufacturers comply with carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions standards,
such as the European Union’s Stage IIIB by helping to reduce fuel
consumption during pump operation.
